Morley's Final Catalogue: One at Lowestoft in 1903 by A. E. Tonge (EMM. 1904, 80). One at Hemley in 1908 (Wlr). Tuddenham Fen about 1900, captured by the late E. J. G. Sparke (in coll. Morley).
Recent Suffolk Status: Very scarce resident and possible immigrant/wanderer. Very few records and not noted every year until 2018, when numbers increased with regular records at some reedbed sites suggesting colonization may have taken place.
Life history: Single-brooded.
Identification: Obscure wainscot has very obvious whitish veins and a small white spot on the forewing. Southern wainscot lacks these and has an incomplete row of black dots. Smoky wainscot normally has a darker stripe of scales down the middle of the forewing.
Habitat: Reedbeds, fens, pond and lake margins with reed.
